BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Alabama men's track and field high jumper Tyler Campbell (Jasper, Ala.) was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week as announced by the conference office today. Campbell cleared his first provisional qualifying mark in the high jump as a freshman as he tied for fourth at the Husky Classic with a mark of 7-0 1/2.
"Tyler is a very talented, young jumper," jumps coach Victor Houston said. "Since he's been here, we've seen flashes of greatness and now we're starting to see his confidence grow and getting results from that."
Campbell, just a freshman, now leads all high jumpers in the SEC and is ranked No. 20 in the country with his new personal best jump.
With the clearance, Campbell is tied for the seventh best jump in school history at Alabama. He is the first person to join the top 10 indoor list since Gabe Warren in 2005.
"I'm personally looking for good things from him at SECs next week," Houston said. "If he's on top of his game, nobody in the SEC can beat this guy. There are so many great freshman in this conference so for him to get this award, he should know all eyes are on him as one of the top freshman in the SEC so that should build his confidence as well."
Alabama will take a week off from competition before heading to Lexington, Ky. for the SEC Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Kentucky. The meet will be held Feb. 27-March 1.
