
Soccer Officially Closes 2008 Campaign with Awards Banquet

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama women's soccer team officially closed the 2008 campaign when it hosted the annual end of the season awards banquet at Coleman Coliseum. Coaches, players, parents, and administrators attended the dinner honoring the success of the fall season.
Head coach Todd Bramble distributed awards, voted on by the team, honoring certain players that made a difference during the season. For their hard work throughout the year, senior Jessica Deegan won the Coaches Award, senior Kailey Corken won offensive MVP, senior Colleen Posey won defensive MVP, and senior goalkeeper Kara Gudmens won all-around MVP accolades.
Deegan concluded her last season at the Capstone second in points with 12 on four goals and four assists. Her four assists was tied for the team lead. Corken had a breakout year in her final season as well as she led all scorers with 17 points on a team-leading seven goals and she also chipped in three assists. Three of the goals were game-winners.
Senior Colleen Posey helped solidify a defensive unit that posted eight shutouts, including five in a row. Posey also helped lead Alabama to holding its opponents to one goal or less on 11 different occasions. Gudmens also played a big part of that as the senior recorded eight shutouts and posted an 1.57 goals against average. Gudmens added 116 saves which moved her career total to 270, which ranks third all-time in the UA annals.
The graduating seniors had one of their best seasons at Alabama ending at 9-9-2, winning all but one of their Friday night games. Alabama made it to the SEC Tournament for the first time since 2004. The Crimson Tide put top seated Florida on the ropes before falling in the final minute of the game. The final score was 2-1.
Sophomore Brooke Rogers was named to the All-SEC Second Team. With the honor Rogers becomes the first member of the Crimson Tide to earn first or second team accolades since Libby Probst was tabbed to the second team in 2004. Justine Bernier and Victoria Frederick were named to the All-Freshman team last season.
Rogers paced the Tide during conference action with eight points on three goals and two assists. Overall Rogers was tied for third on the squad with 10 points on three goals and four assists. Her four helpers were tied for the team lead.
Senior goalkeeper Karen Lansden was named to the SEC Community Service team. Lansden, a junior from Houston, Texas has been involved extensively in supporting the Tuscaloosa Community for most of her days at the Capstone. She has been a weekly volunteer at Arcadia Elementary School and has helped with field trips and PTA fundraising.
Additionally, Landsen was involved with the Tuscaloosa YMCA soccer clinics, and also pledged her time to help with the UA Halloween Extravaganza. Lansden also took a summer mission trip to Mexico. Landsen will graduate in May with a bachelors and masters degree in economics.
In the classroom the soccer team had 15 members named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll under first-year head coach Todd Bramble.
The honorees were Alex Butera (Telecommunications), Kailey Corken (Spanish), Jessica Deegan (Computer Engineering), Victoria Frederick (Pre-Dental), Kara Gudmens (Human Development and Family Studies), Hailey Hull (Food and Nutrition), Cara Kelly (Advertising), Kelsey King (Chemical and Biological Engineering), Karen Lansden (Commerce and Business), Grace Lawson (Public Relations), Carly Mygrants (Public Relations), Callie Pike (Exercise Science), Colleen Posey (Human Development and Family Studies), Brooke Rogers (Commerce and Business) and Ashley Scheidt (Health Care Management).
