STARKVILLE, Miss. - The volleyball team closed out its 2009 season with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-18) loss to Mississippi State Friday in the Newell-Grissom Building. The Crimson Tide finishes the season with a record of 8-22 overall and 6-14 against Southeastern Conference opponents, while the Bulldogs improved to 9-22 and 5-15 in league matches.
Junior Alyssa Meuth led the match in kills with 14 marking the ninth consecutive match she has tallied double-figure kills. She was the only Alabama player to tally double-digit kills, however four ended the match with double-digit digs including senior Brooks Webster and junior Kayla Schmidt with 11 apiece, and junior Mary Catherine Aune and freshman Kelsey Anderson with 10 digs apiece. Schmidt also finished with 24 assists for her 11th double-double of the season.
In the first set, neither team took more than a one-point lead until Mississippi State used a 4-0 run midway through the frame for the 17-13 advantage. Alabama cut the lead to two moments later at 21-19 off a Meuth kill, but it was too little, too late as the Bulldogs would then close out the first on another 4-0 run for the 25-19 win.
After a brief 1-0 edge by the Tide in the second, Mississippi State soared ahead with six unanswered points causing Alabama to call a timeout. From there, the Tide began to slowly chip away at its deficit and would soon tie the set at 13-13 thanks to a service ace from Webster. Alabama stayed close, but could never take the lead from the Bulldogs. The Tide fought off one set point, but was unable to stay alive any longer with Mississippi State grabbing the 25-22 victory in the second.
The start of the third looked much like the second except this time the Bulldogs began with a 6-0 run before giving Alabama its first point off a bad set. Mississippi State continued to dominate the frame not allowing the Tide to get any closer than four points of the lead. The Bulldogs finished the final set strong scoring five of the last seven points to take the third 25-18.
