
Volleyball Concludes Season Friday at Mississippi State

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The volleyball team will play its final match of the 2009 season Friday when it heads to Starkville to take on Mississippi State for a 7:00 p.m. (CST) tilt. The Crimson Tide enters the contest at 8-21 on the season and 6-13 against Southeastern Conference opponents, while the Bulldogs stand at 8-22 overall and 4-15 versus league foes.
"We head into this match wanting to end our season on a positive note," said head coach Judy Green. "We would like to pick up our second SEC road win of the season."
Last time out, Alabama suffered a 3-0 loss to Southeastern Conference Champion, and 17th-ranked, LSU in Baton Rouge. Despite the loss, junior Alyssa Meuth collected a match-high 13 kills followed by senior Brooks Webster and sophomore Ashley Frazier, who added eight kills apiece. Junior Kayla Schmidt led the Tide in assists dishing out 27 in the match. On defense, both Webster and freshman Kelsey Anderson collected double-figure digs with 11 and 10, respectively.
Webster continued to move up the Alabama career list in kills as she now stands at eighth, surpassing Jennifer Bibber last Sunday. The Baltimore native has 1,250 kills in her four seasons with the Tide.
Mississippi State enters Friday's match having won three of its last four matches including victories over South Carolina, Arkansas and Mississippi. Last time the Bulldogs hit the court, however, they fell to LSU on the road 3-0. Leading Mississippi State in kills is junior Ashley Newsome with 2.99 per frame. Senior Dorey Gray averages 7.45 assists to pace the Bulldog setters, while junior Kayla Woodard tops the defense with 4.34 digs per set.
In the season's earlier meeting in Tuscaloosa, Alabama rallied from a late deficit in the fifth set to escape Mississippi State 3-2 (16-25, 25-13, 25-21, 25-17, 15-12).
