
Volleyball Opens Final home Weekend with Mississippi

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The volleyball team (7-19, 5-11 SEC) returns home this weekend, hosting its final two home matches of the season. First up, the Crimson Tide welcomes in the Mississippi Rebels (8-17, 2-13 SEC) on Friday, Nov. 13 at 7:00 p.m. (CST) in the CAVE.
"Our team knows the importance of this weekend," said head coach Judy Green. "We will be determined to accomplish the goals we have set."
Last weekend, Alabama faced a tough road trip, dropping matches to Kentucky (3-1) on Friday and Tennessee (3-0) on Sunday. Junior Alyssa Meuth led the team in kills for the weekend, collecting 14 against the Wildcats and 10 against the Lady Vols. Senior Brooks Webster was also able to total 11 kills against Kentucky, while scooping up 10 digs against Tennessee. Junior Kayla Schmidt had an outstanding weekend for the Tide, dishing out 36 assists versus the Wildcats and collecting a double-double (19 digs and 15 assists) on Sunday against the Lady Vols. Freshman Kelsey Anderson was another bright spot on the weekend, finishing with a total of 30 digs.
Mississippi comes into the match having lost its last six in a row, including sweeps in five of those contests. The Rebels are led offensively by sophomore Katie Norris, who has racked up a total of 277 kills (3.74 per set) so far this season. The offense is run by freshman setter Marielle Oestermeyer. She has 303 assists on the season, averaging 5.72 per set. Defensively, sophomore Morgan Springer has 357 digs, with an average of nearly four per set.
Friday's match will serve as Military Night as well as Camp Kids Reunion Night. All members of the military are invited to come out and receive free admission by showing their military ID card at the door. Also, all kids who attended volleyball camp this summer are invited to come out and see the Tide play. Admission is $3 for adults and free for children 12 and under and for all University of Alabama students. In addition, those who bring a canned good for "Beat Auburn/Beat Hunger" will receive $1 admission.

Next up, the Tide hosts its final home match of the 2009 season. Alabama will face off against Arkansas on Sunday, Nov. 15 beginning at 1:00 p.m. (CST). The match will be televised live on Fox SportsSouth. Prior to the match, the Tide's three seniors will be recognized as part of the team's annual Senior Day festivities.
