AUBURN, Ala. - The doubles tandem of sophomore Courtney McLane and freshman Alexa Guarachi fell in the finals of the 2009 Wilson/ITA Southern Regional Championships, losing a hard fought 8-6 match to the top seeded pair of junior Karen Njissen and sophomore Kristi Boxx from Mississippi.
"Courtney and Alexa played a very good match that came down to just a couple of points," said head coach Jenny Mainz. "I thought we ran our plays well and competed aggressively, but Njissen and Boxx just served and returned a little better."
McLane and Guarachi lived up to their current national ranking of No. 43, staying with the ninth-ranked Rebel duo through most of the match. However, Njissen and Boxx were able to earn a break at 5-5 and held serve the rest of the way to claim the victory.
"The break at 5-5 was obviously the turning point of the match," added Mainz. "Also, because our first-serve percentage was a little lower, Njissen and Boxx were able to put more pressure on us on the second serve attempts. It was a well-played match on both sides, and we certainly had our chances."
The Crimson Tide pair will head back to Tuscaloosa and join the rest of the team as they prepare to take on the U.S. Junior National Team on Wednesday, Oct. 28. The match will begin at 5:00 p.m. (CST) and will take place at the University of Alabama Tennis Stadium.
