TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama junior left tackle Andre Smith declared his intentions over the weekend to forego his senior season and enter the 2009 National Football League Draft.
"He (Andre Smith) has represented himself, his family, and this university in a fine fashion and we are pleased with what he has done to help make this team successful," Alabama head coach Nick Saban said prior to the Sugar Bowl. "His legacy as a player here should be the fact that he made All-American here and that is a reflection of the hard work that he has put in during his three years here."
Smith is projected as the No. 2 overall pick in the latest mock draft by ESPN's Todd McShay. Smith was a unanimous first-team All-America selection and anchored the Crimson Tide's heralded offensive line that helped pave the way for the SEC's No. 2 rushing offense. Smith became Alabama's second Outland Trophy winner and was a finalist for the Rotary Lombardi Award.
