
Women's Track Finishes Third at adidas Classic at Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. - The women's track and field team competed today at the adidas Classic hosted by the University of Nebraska. The meet was held at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
Heather Matherson and Talaya Owens led the Crimson Tide today. Matherson claimed the 60m dash title running 7.63, just .01 seconds off her career best. She also had a fifth place finish in the 400m and was part of the 4x400m relay team that placed fourth.
Owens took home the title in the 400m dash running a time of 55.60, a near two second personal best in the event. She placed fourth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.58. Owens was also part of the fourth place 4x400m relay team.
"I was happy with Talaya Owens in the 400 and also with Heather Matherson winning the 60," assistant coach Scott Roberts said. "That'll be good for their confidence for the rest of the season."
Toni Graham placed third in the 200m dash with a time of 24.92.
In the 3,000m run, the freshman duo of Kelsey Johnson and Sara Vaughn who ran so well during the cross country season continued to show they are ready at this level of competition with both running over 20 second career bests. Johnson ran a 9:46.01 to finish second while Vaughn crossed the line in 9:55.81 to place fifth.
Chealsea Taylor cleared the bar set at 5-07.25 in the high jump to finish third overall and was also on the fourth place 4x400m relay team.
Angelica Howard threw the shot put 46-10.25 to place third in the event. She placed fifth in the weight throw with a heave of 51-7.75.
Capri Knox and Nicole Okolo finished 3-4 in the triple jump respectively. Knox leaped 39-08.50 to set a new personal best by almost one foot and Okolo jumped 39-02.25.
"I was also pleased with Capri Knox being on the boards five times out of six and established a new personal best in the triple jump," Roberts said. "She's making huge strides this year over last year."
In the pole vault, Lynda Cooper garnered another top three finish clearing the bar set at 12-07.50 to place third.
Jordan Harper was a member of the fourth place 4x400m relay team that ran 3:56.95. She also placed fifth in the 800m run with a time of 2:20.42
In team scoring, No. 20 Nebraska claimed the title tallying 204 points followed by Kansas with 138.33 points. Alabama finished third with 79 points. Wichita State (78) and Florida State (19.67) rounded out the team scoring in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
"We had a 21 day lay off between our last two meets," Roberts said. "So I thought we were really flat today, but there were still some good performances."
The women will travel to Lexington, Ky. for the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet on Feb. 6.
