TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The women's tennis team won its second consecutive 7-0 decision when it swept Tulane Friday at the Hank Crisp Indoor Tennis Facility. With the win, the Crimson Tide improves to 2-0 on the season, while the Green Wave falls to 4-2 overall.
"Again, we came out ready to play," said head coach Jenny Mainz. "These matches are so important for improving and working forward. They give us an opportunity to step up to another gear. Tulane is a solid team. They are a first year program, but they competed well and fought hard. We played many quality points. This is a chance for fine tuning and working toward the SEC season. I was pleased with the outcome, and I think we are doing a good job of taking advantage of these opportunities."
Alabama jumped out to a 1-0 lead following doubles after capturing all three matches. Finishing first for the Tide at the No. 3 position was junior Alice Tunaru and sophomore Meritt Emery with an 8-2 decision over Tulane freshmen Marcela Fonseca and Sharon Siegel. Alabama clinched the doubles point at the No. 2 spot as junior Paulina Bigos and freshman Taylor Lindsey downed Green Wave freshmen Caroline Gerber and Jessica Lange 8-1. Wrapping up the doubles sweep for the Tide was sophomore Tiffany Welcher and freshman Courtney McLane at the No. 1 position with an 8-3 victory against Tulane freshmen Mariam Kurdadze and Lindsay Dvorak.
Picking up Alabama's second team point and first point in singles was Bigos at No. 3. After taking the first set 6-1, Bigos battled back from being down 2-1 to win the second set over Fonseca 6-3. McLane fought through a tough 7-5 first-set win to come back strong and take care of business in the second by winning 6-1 against Dvorak. Securing the match win for the Tide at the No. 1 spot was Welcher with a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Kurdadze. On court four it was deuces wild for Emery who overcame numerous lengthy games to come out on top over Gerber 6-2, 6-3. In her first singles appearance in dual-match play this season, Tunaru cruised past Siegel 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6. Wrapping up the match at No. 5 was senior Shelley Godwin who won 6-1 in the first set and came back from being down 4-2 in the second to win her match against Lange 6-1, 6-4.
