The University of Alabama men's basketball team returns home to face the University of Georgia Saturday evening in Coleman Coliseum. Tipoff between the Crimson Tide and Bulldogs is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast live on Fox Sports South.
Alabama is gunning for its first win under interim head coach Philip Pearson who took over the reins of the program on January 26. Georgia finds itself in similar straits after head coach Dennis Felton was relieved of his duties on Thursday. Pete Herrmann guides the Bulldogs in the interim.
In addition to a new look on the bench, the Crimson Tide coaching staff will be participating in the Coaches vs. Cancer `Suits and Sneakers Awareness Weekend.' The staff will wear sneakers with their suits to raise cancer awareness.
The Crimson Tide is coming off an 89-80 loss at Arkansas on Thursday to fall to 12-8 overall and 2-4 in Southeastern Conference action.
Meanwhile, Georgia is winless in the league this season at 0-5 and carries a 9-11 overall record after falling, 83-57, at Florida in its seventh-straight loss.
UA is 10-3 at Coleman Coliseum this season and 2-1 in SEC play while Georgia is winless on the road at 0-4. The game will also be the 134th installment in the series that UA leads, 87-46.
Reigning SEC Freshman of the Week JaMychal Green leads the Tide back home after scoring a career-high 24 points in the loss at Arkansas. In his last two games, he's averaged 19.5 points and has scored in double-figures in five-straight games. The Montgomery, Ala. native leads all SEC freshmen in rebounding (6.7 rpg) and is sixth in scoring (9.9 ppg).
Alonzo Gee rebounded from a sub-par game against Kentucky to score 18 point with a team-high seven rebounds at Arkansas to up his team-best scoring average to 14.2 points per game.Gee leads the Tide in scoring (14.2) and rebounding (7.5).
In its five SEC games, Georgia been outscored by nearly 15 points per game and are shooting just 37.6 percent in their conference games. Protecting the ball has been an issue for Georgia with 17.4 turnovers per game this season and 19.0 against SEC competition.
Terrance Woodbury and Trey Thompkins lead UGA with 12.7 and 12.6 points per game, respectively. Thompkins is also the team's top rebounder with 6.3 per game.
Following Saturday's game, the team will continue play on Thursday against another SEC Eastern Division foe when it travels to Nasvhille to face Vanderbilt. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CST with the game being broadcast by ESPN2.
