TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The volleyball team welcomed its third offseason addition Friday when head coach Judy Green announced Sarah Machen was transferring from the University of Oklahoma to join the Crimson Tide.
"We are very happy to have Sarah join our program," said Green. "We recruited her initially out of high school and think she is a fantastic athlete. She's had some great training the past couple of years which will definitely help our team."
After redshirting the 2007 season, Machen, a middle blocker, appeared in three matches for the Sooners in 2008 where she collected one kill and two blocks.
Machen, a native of Mobile, Ala., led McGill-Toolen High School to two state championships and a runner-up finish. She was a two-year captain on the squad that ranked as high as No. 44 in the nation along with a two-time Alabama All-State selection. Machen received several other honors including all-area and all-county first team, South MVP at the All-Star Classic and "Super 12" First Team by the Mobile Register.
She was just as successful in the classroom as she was on the court being named to the President's List all four years in high school. Machen graduated in the top four percent of her class and was nominated for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award.
"Sarah will add much needed collegiate experience to our team," Green added. "We are excited about this addition and welcome her to the Alabama family."
