TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama Swimming and Diving teams capped off their first month of training and an intense week of work outs, with its first competition of the season on Saturday, with the women taking on Delta State and Vanderbilt and the men facing Delta State.
Alabama not only won all three meets, but swept them, winning all individual races and relays as well.
A dozen rookies made their Alabama debut Saturday, with Andrew Reeves (Birmingham, Ala.), brother former Tide letterman Charles Reeves (2000-03), making the first freshman splash as part of the Tide's 200 medley relay. Charles Reeves still figures among the Tide's all-time top-10 in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes.
Freshman Joe Ziegler (Tallahassee, Fla.) came away with the first individual win of the meet and the first rookie win of the season when he took first in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:42.86. He also won the 200 backstroke, touching the wall at 1:52.10. Oliver Basse (West Palm Beach, Fla.) also notched a win in his first Tide meet, taking first in the 200 butterfly with a 1:56.49.
On the women's side of the slate Cameron Bass (Birmingham, Ala.) made the first rookie splash taking second in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:25.46. Suzanne Schwee (Ashburn, Va.) notched the first freshman of the season, taking top honors in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:04.99. She also won the 200 IM.
Freshman diver Carrie Dragland (Woodinville, Wash.) also came away with a pair wins, notching 243.80 points to win the one-meter event and 260.60 points to take the three-meter.
Junior Shannon Van Hoy (Charlotte, N.C.) led the way for the upperclassmen, winning three individual events. Juniors Riley Boulden (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Aaron Fleshner (Spring, Texas) led the way for the men, winning a pair of events each. Boulden won the 100 and 200 breaststroke while Ashworth took top honors off the one and three-meter boards.
