LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Alabama soccer team saw its five match win streak come to an end as the Crimson Tide fell 2-0 Sunday afternoon to the Kentucky Wildcats at the UK Soccer Complex. Kentucky used a penalty kick in the first half and added on another in the second half to improve to 3-5-2 overall and 1-0-1 in SEC play. The Crimson Tide move to 6-3-1 overall and 1-1-0 in league action.
"I thought we came out and executed the game plan well early on," head coach Todd Bramble said. "We didn't respond well to the first goal. Kentucky was the better team today. There were tough lessons learned today and hopefully that will make us a better team down the road."
Kentucky struck first, taking advantage of a foul in the box. Kristin Kover took the penalty kick and was successful in the upper right 90 of the goal for her first goal of the season and a 1-0 Kentucky lead at the 35-minute mark.
The Wildcats added an insurance goal in the 58th minute off a Kover corner kick. Kover sent a ball in front of the Alabama goal that Kate Hughes settled and knocked over to Giuleana Lopez. Lopez finished off the play for her second goal of the season and a 2-0 UK lead.
For the first time since Sept. 7 the Crimson Tide allowed a goal. Alabama was riding a five-match scoreless streak. UA goalkeeper Kara Gudmens went 414 minutes without allowing a goal until Kentucky beat the keeper on the PK. The Cincinnati, Ohio native followed up a career-high 13 saves on Friday with seven against the Wildcats.
Alabama was out-shot by Kentucky 17-8. Leading the way for the Crimson Tide was seniors Kailey Corken and Jamie Zimmerman. Corken fired off three shots while Zimmerman tallied two. Lopez and Kover paced UK with four shots apiece.
Alabama will return home and continue SEC play. The Crimson Tide will welcome the two schools from Mississippi. UA will host Mississippi State on Friday, Oct. 3 and then close out the weekend against Mississippi on Sunday, Oct. 5. Both games will be played at the Alabama Soccer Complex.
