ELM GROVE, Wis. - Sophomore Tiffany Welcher finished the tournament with a perfect 3-0 record to capture the Milwaukee Fall Tennis Classic Tournament Championship. Alabama also gathered four additional wins, two in doubles and two in singles, on Sunday at the event that was held at the Western Racquet Club. Paulina Bigos was honored with the Charles Mulcahy Sportsmanship Award that was voted on by the participants.
"Overall, this was an excellent weekend," said head coach Jenny Mainz. "The team took a gigantic step forward, but now we need to realize that this is the standard. We need to be engaged in every point and have to be consistent with that."
In doubles play, the duo of Welcher and Bigos won a close match against Wisconsin's Elizabeth Carpenter and Jessica Seyferth 9-8. With the win, Welcher and Bigos finished as the doubles runner-ups. Bianca Svensson and Lindsey picked up their second win of the tournament together behind an 8-4 victory over the Badgers' Katya Mirnova and Angela Chupa.
"The team came out of the gates ready to play doubles," said Mainz. "We had a big win from Tiffany and Paulina. They played so dynamic and did a great job of pulling that match out. One of our goals was to come out and play aggressive on day three, and I think we did a tremendous job of reaching that goal."
Welcher defeated Texas A&M's Elze Potgieter 3-6, 6-2, 10-4 to finish the Classic with an unblemished singles record and the Championship. The tournament champion was decided by a point system, where players earned a designated number of points per match won based on the position she played in. Also picking up wins for Alabama in singles was Paulina Bigos and Taylor Lindsey. Bigos rolled past the Aggies' Morgan Frank 6-4, 7-6, while Lindsey took down Ashley Turpin 6-4, 6-3.
"Tiffany did an outstanding job of taking care of opportunities when she got them," added Mainz. "Paulina did a great job of refocusing after yesterday's loss. She really came out today and redeemed herself. Taylor also did an excellent job. She has really come a long way already this season."
The women's tennis team returns to the courts next weekend when it hosts the 22nd annual Roberta Alison Fall Classic Sept. 26 - 28 at the Alabama Tennis Complex. Matches will begin each morning at 9:00 a.m. (CST).
