TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Rolltide.com and the Alabama women's soccer team present its new athlete for 11 questions. Select players and coaches will check in weekly on Rolltide.com and answer questions pertaining to things on and off the field. The third edition features junior goalkeeper Kara Gudmens.
Rolltide.com: After not playing last season what are you most looking forward to this year?
Kara Gudmens: The thing I am looking forward to the most is actually getting back out there to play. I am excited to compete against the tough competition and make the big saves.
Rolltide.com: What is the best part of playing goalkeeper?
Gudmens: The best part of being a goalkeeper is the pressure of being the last line of defense. I enjoy the pressure of having the team look to me to make the big saves.
Rolltide.com: A lot of goalkeepers want to play in the field ... what other position would you want to play and why?
Gudmens: Actually, before I became a goalkeeper I was a forward. If I wasn't a keeper, I would still want to be a forward because I would want to score goals.
Rolltide.com: There is a large contingency from the Cincinnati area ... how familiar were you of them and what is it like having all of you here in Alabama?
Gudmens: I knew Colleen Posey, Cara Kelly, and Kailey Corken because I played on their club teams and also played against them throughout my club career. I enjoy having five other teammates from Cincinnati because when I talk about home someone else knows exactly what I am talking about.
Rolltide.com: How has the new coaching staff been and how is the transition?
Gudmens: The new coaching staff has been great. They understand the game really well and I feel that they have made a quick impact on our team. The team's style and confidence has changed for the good and I'm excited to finish my soccer career with this coaching staff.
Rolltide.com: Do you have a favorite professional soccer team and why?
Gudmens: I don't really have a favorite professional team, but I do enjoy watching Manchester United because Cristiano Ronaldo is good to look at while he plays.
Rolltide.com: What is on your IPOD right now?
Gudmens: Right now my IPOD has a variety of music. It ranges from rap to country. My favorite group to listen to is Rascal Flatts. You can't go wrong with them.
Rolltide.com: What is your favorite pregame meal?
Gudmens: My favorite pregame meal probably has to be Jason's Deli. Their salad, pasta, and fruit are amazing. I usually go for seconds too!
Rolltide.com: When and why did you start playing the game of soccer?
Gudmens: I started playing soccer at the age of four. I wanted to play soccer because both my older brother and sister were playing and I wanted to follow in their footsteps.
Rolltide.com: Why did you choose to go to the University of Alabama?
Gudmens: I chose the University of Alabama because the campus was beautiful and the athletic facilities were amazing. I was a little hesitant about coming so far south, but I felt like Alabama had a lot to offer.
Rolltide.com: What do you plan to do after you graduate?
Gudmens: After I graduate I plan on staying at the University of Alabama to get my masters in Human Development and Family Studies.
