TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama women's soccer team opened its exhibition slate with a 5-0 victory over Jackson State Saturday evening at the Alabama Soccer Complex. Crimson Tide sophomore Victoria Frederick led the charge with three goals and an assist.
"All we have addressed up to this point is defending," head coach Todd Bramble said. "It was important that we won the ball and that we saw our team open up and get into a good attacking shape. We invested a lot of time out-possessing them and that enabled their back line to die towards the end of the first half which allowed us to get those two next goals."
Alabama goalkeepers Kara Gudmens and Karen Lansden combined for the shutout. The Crimson Tide netted four goals in the first half and found the net once again in the second frame. UA out-shot JSU 27-2.
Frederick, who led Alabama in points and assists last season picked up right where she left off. Frederick found the back of the net just four minutes in on a one-on-one break away the she slipped into the right corner.
Alabama closed out the first half with a flurry of scoring. Sophomore Rosaly Petriello drilled a header in the upper-v on the right side off a cross from senior Kailey Corken in the 29th minute. In the 38th minute senior Jamie Zimmerman got on the score sheet on a one touch goal off a Frederick pass from the right side.
Just one minute later Frederick struck again. The sophomore gathered a loose ball on the 18 and made a quick turn to beat Allison Lane far post. Frederick completed the hat trick in the 60th minute on a header from Zimmerman.
"Obviously we have someone in Victoria Frederick who has special qualities and those started to emerge a little bit tonight," Bramble said. "This game gave her some confidence so I thought it was worth it."
The Crimson Tide will open the regular season against reigning Conference USA champs Memphis. The Tide will have to hit the road to play the Tigers on Aug. 29 at 5:00 p.m. at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
