New Era...Same GoalAugust 15, 2008Preseason continues on successfully, with the best weather you could hope for during an August in Alabama. Every training session has been really physically challenging. The rope stretching and ice baths are so crucial for our legs to be ready for the next session, along with the combination of the pre-practice jams in the locker room, courtesy of Rosie and Brooke, and the catered meals from the top notch restaurants in town.
Wednesday night we focused on defense and established a solid foundation to start building from. Thursday morning we worked on possession and had a really intense six on six round robin tournament.
There was a brief emergency after training, when Jamie's lunch wasn't delivered with the rest of the teams', but luckily Sherry Kimbro got Newk's on the phone instantly and she was fed. Last night we split up offense and defense for some specialized work. We finished off with a competitive shooting game, one of the few times we get angry when a goalie makes a save. The goalies have been working really hard, and have claimed a `goalie athletic trainer' and `goalie water bottles' that no one else is allowed to use.
We've really settled into a day where we wake-up, eat, train, eat, sleep, eat, train, go to bed. It's a predictable routine. Every morning over breakfast we discuss the highlights, or lowlights, from the Olympics the night before, and try to guess things like what Michael Phelps listens to on his Ipod.
For the upcoming season, our team has been divided into families. Each family will add an incoming freshman when a senior member graduates. We've had a lot of fun coming up with family names, since it's the start of a legacy that will last forever, probably longer than most of our lives.
Along with the bonding we get as we are tortured in the ice baths, it's a fun way for different classes to mix. We have the afternoon off and I think everyone will be fresh and sooo pumped up for our scrimmage tomorrow. We have quite possibly, the best pre-game warm-up playlist ever created, I bet our fans will be as ready to play as we are. In addition, I'm guessing we have the loudest speakers in NCAA history and if you don't believe me you can ask the campus police, who have had noise complaints.
Anyways after a quick walk through tomorrow morning, I think we will all be ready to take the field at 5:00 p.m. We still have a good amount of preseason left, and plenty of things to work on but I know our enthusiasm and the basics we've been practicing so far should show in the scrimmage tomorrow, so be there and be loud!
Roll Tide!!
