TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Head volleyball coach Judy Green announced today that Lauren Wintzinger will join the Crimson Tide for the 2008 season. A 5-11 defensive specialist and outside hitter, Wintzinger is part of an impressive incoming freshman class for Alabama.
"We are excited to have Lauren in our program," Green said. "She is a very special addition to our program because she bleeds crimson and white. It's something that we need to continue to develop in our program. We want to keep our best in-state players at home and get them to come to Alabama. Lauren is going to adjust to our program very well. She is going to let her passion for Alabama shine every day that she is a part of the program."
Wintzinger comes to the Capstone after wrapping up a standout prep career at Huntsville High School that included four straight state championships. The 2007 Alabama State Player of the Year and the 2007 All-Metro Player of the Year, she was named a 2007 High School All-American by PrepVolleyball.com. She set the all-time career kills record at HHS. Wintzinger played club volleyball for Alabama Elite.
A member of the National Honor Society, she was also named a 2007 PrepVolleyball.com Academic All-American. She plans to major in Chemical Engineering at the Capstone.
Wintzinger has strong family ties to the University. Her father, Roland Wintzinger, swam for Alabama and her uncle, Mike Butler, ran track for the Tide.
