ORLANDO, FLA. - The University of Alabama golf team is well-represented at this week's 102nd Southern Amateur Championship which is being held July 16-19 at Lake Nona Golf and Country Club in Orlando, Fla.
At Wednesday's first round, Matthew Swan, Alabama's All-Southeastern Conference golfer from Montgomery and 2008 senior Mark Harrell, produced the low rounds of the Tide contingent. They both shot 2-under par, 70 and were among a T-16th. Swan will be a senior on the Alabama team this fall. Harrell just ended a successful collegiate career where among his accomplishments was playing in every possible tournament during his entire UA career and participating in the U.S. Amateur and the U.S. Open (he competed as an amateur in 2007).
Montgomery's Hunter Hamrick, who graduated from high school early and enrolled in school at Alabama in January 2008 and redshirted this spring while he got acclimated from the mid-year jump, shot 71, which is 1-over par, on Wednesday. He was T-35th. And three Bama golfers were among a T-85th at 2-over par. All-SEC golfer Gator Todd, a senior in 2008, and 2008 All-District golfer Matt Hughes joined incoming freshman golfer Bud Cauley in that tie after all three shot 74 to open play.
