TUSCALOOSA, Ala - University of Alabama junior golfer Matthew Swan has been named PING All-America Honorable Mention. The Golf Coaches Association of America announced its 2nd, 3rd and Honorable Mention Teams on Friday.
Swan is a native of Montgomery and helped the Crimson Tide to its most successful season of golf, winning the Southeastern Conference team championship in April and ending the 2008 season as the nation's No. 1 ranked team in the final Golf World/NIKE Coaches' poll. Swan competed in 10 tournaments this season and had a 73.52 stroke average. The three-time U.S. Amateur participant won his first collegiate tournament in March when he was medalist at the Puerto Rico Classic, a win that helped propel Alabama to that tournament's team championship. Alabama won six team tournament championships this season and Swan played on five of those winning teams. He was voted 1st Team All-Southeastern Conference by the league's golf coaches in April and named to the 2008 All-Southeast Region Team by the GCAA.
On May 31 his teammate, senior Michael Thompson, was among the golfers the GCAA announced to the PING 1st Team All-America.
