Tuscaloosa, Ala. - The University of Alabama women's soccer team will take on a difficult 2008 schedule that includes 10 teams that advanced to last year's NCAA Tournament, headlined by defending national champion Southern California along with a tough slate of Southeastern Conference opponents, head coach Todd Bramble announced.
"The rigors of this schedule present us with a tremendous opportunity to build our program in our first season at Alabama," Bramble said in anticipation of his debut season with the Tide after a successful stint as head coach at Clemson. "We have our work cut out for us, but the benefit of a strong non-conference schedule will be preparation for the SEC matches."
In addition to six SEC opponents (Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Auburn and LSU) that made the 2007 NCAA Tournament, the Tide will face four non-conference foes who enjoyed NCAA appearance last year as well in Memphis, Cal State Fullerton, USC and Samford. The Crimson Tide will host a preseason exhibition on August 16 against Jackson State in Tuscaloosa before hitting the road for the season opener at Memphis on August 29.
The Tide then faces Jacksonville State at home on Aug. 31 before embarking on a two-game California swing that begins September 5 against Cal State Fullerton and concludes at Los Angeles against USC on Sept. 7. Four home matches follow (Samford on Sept. 12, Wright State on Sept. 14, Tennessee-Chattanooga on Sept. 19 and Mississippi Valley State on Sept. 21) before the SEC slate commences.
The SEC schedule features home games with Mississippi State (October 3), Mississippi (Oct. 5), South Carolina (Oct. 17), Florida (Oct. 19) and Georgia (Oct. 26) with road contests at Vanderbilt (Sept. 26), Kentucky (Sept. 28), Arkansas (Oct. 10), LSU (Oct. 12), Tennessee (Oct. 23) and Auburn (Oct. 31). The 2008 SEC Tournament is scheduled for November 5-9 at Orange Beach, Ala.
