Conway, S.C. - NCAA CONWAY REGIONAL POST-GAME QUOTES Saturday, May 31, 2008
Alabama Head Coach Jim Wells "It was very frustrating that we played our hearts out and I told our position players that and that they didn't deserve to lose like that. It is nobody's responsibility except mine and not getting it done. It was similar to last weekend but last week we found enough outs to get to the end of the game. I thought the one bright spot was (Jimmy) Nelson along with a lot of offense, but other than that, the other people who ran out to the mound did not get it done. With Quigley, they said he was good to go but we were ready, if we were forced, to pull the trigger early and go with Nelson. Even though Nelson struggled at times, I thought he gave us some innings and give the game to (Austin) Graham and throw him three innings to finish it out, but again, it didn't end that way."
Regarding giving Coastal second chances: "That's with anybody and certainly at this time of year, but there were still plenty of pitches to be made that would overcome any errors and we just broke down and were running out of everybody we had at the end. It's just very disappointing. Howell will pitch tomorrow and we will get another shot to play."
Alabama freshman 2B Ross Wilson "I'm fine. We have a big game tomorrow and we have to come prepared and bounce back tomorrow.
On emotions of hitting two home runs and making two errors: "Yeah, but that's baseball, in a nutshell. If your feelings go down for a second, then it will take you out of the next play. The good thing is, we have a game tomorrow and hopefully we can get some revenge on Coastal Carolina if we beat East Carolina."
On what happened on the ground ball: "I don't really know. I guess I looked up and it hit in front of me. It doesn't happen that much. I guess it was a tough throw, I was thinking on the throw.
On difficulty of coming back: "If any team can handle, it's this team. After we lost to Kentucky, we came back and beat Georgia. The No. 7 seed (SEC Tournament) came back and did it. If any team can do that, this team can."
Coastal Carolina Head Coach Gary Gilmore "There was no doubt this was a very big win for us but it really only matters if we get one more win. Our crowd was the 10th man tonight and we would not have won this game without them. No doubt if we were on the road that we would have lost. But our guys kept competing and battling and it paid off late in the game. Alabama is a great program and an outstanding team, so this win was significant. But we know we still have a long way to go still in this regional."
