CONWAY REGIONAL SCOUTING REPORT
No. 1 Seed COASTAL CAROLINA (47-12) Big South Conference Champions
COASTAL CAROLINA SCOUTING REPORT: Coastal Carolina is hitting .324 (665 for 2,051) as a team with 88 home runs and 430 RBI this season ... CCU averages 7.9 runs and 11.3 hits per game ... Junior catcher Dock Doyle is the leading hitter with a .365 (81 for 222) with 16 home runs and 65 RBI ... He is one home shy of the team's triple crown ... Freshman infielder/outfielder Scott Woodward is second on the team with a .357 average (75 for 210) with 23 extra base hits (7 HR) and 42 RBI ... He also leads the Chants with 40 stolen bases ... CCU has stolen 97 bases (132 attempts) this season ... Junior outfielder David Sappelt (.344, 16 HR, 61 RBI) and junior first baseman David Anderson (.342, 17 HR, 51 RBI) have also swatted double-digit homers ... The 1991 Atlantic Regional field consisted of Florida State, Georgia Tech, Alabama, Florida International, St. John's and Coastal Carolina ... Coastal is in the same conference as Radford, who is coached by former Tide assistant coach Joe Raccuia ... Raccuia is assisted by Allen Rice, who was a four-year letterman at Alabama from 2002-05 ... Former Coastal Carolina and All-Big South catcher Chad Oxendine was a volunteer assistant coach at Alabama n 2007.
ALABAMA-COASTAL CAROLINA SERIES: Alabama and Coastal Carolina will be meeting for the first time this weekend at the Conway Regional.
ALABAMA VS. BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE: Alabama is 13-4 (.765) all-time against the Big South Conference. The Crimson Tide is 6-4 against Winthrop, 4-0 against Radford and 3-0 against UNC Asheville. Alabama has never faced Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, High Point, Liberty or VMI. The Crimson Tide is 1-1 against Big South teams in NCAA Regional play, splitting two games with Winthrop at the 1995 NCAA East Regional in Clemson. Winthrop beat Alabama, 4-0, in Wells first NCAA Regional game as Alabama's head coach. Coach Wells is 11-4 (.000) in his career against teams from the Big South Conference, including wins over Winthrop (6-4) UNC Asheville (3-0) and Radford (2-0).
No. 2 Seed EAST CAROLINA PIRATES (40-19) At-Large Selection
ECU SCOUTING REPORT: East Carolina is hitting .315 (649 for 2,063) as a team with 79 home runs and 426 RBI this season. The Pirates average 7.8 runs and 11 hits per game. Senior outfielder Harrison Eldridge leads the offensive attack with a .355 (82 for 231) average with 22 extra base hits, 32 stolen bases (37 attempts) and 56 runs scored. The Pirates have four players with double figure home runs, including senior catcher Corey Kemp (.349, 16 HR, 67 RBI), junior infielder Stephen Batts (.335, 10 HR, 45 RBI), junior infielder Ryan Wood (.300, 12 HR, 49 RBI) and sophomore first baseman Kyle Roller (.299, 11 HR, 47 RBI). On the mound, ECU has compiled a 40-19 record with six saves and a 3.96 ERA. The three weekend starters - RHP Seth Maness (14 GS, 9-1, 2.87 ERA), RHP Justin Bristow (15 GS, 8-2, 3.22 ERA) and TJ Hose (16 G, 6-4, 5.02 ERA) - are a combined 23-7 on the mound. The Pirates have made 83 errors (.964) and turned 45 double plays this season.
ECU NOTES: Junior RHP Justin Bristow (Richmond, Vir.) originally signed with Auburn before transferring to East Carolina ... He played three games against Alabama in 2006 in Tuscaloosa and went 2 for 12 (.167) with three strikeouts against the Tide as the starting shortstop ... ECU assistant coach Link Jarrett played at Florida State and was on the Seminoles team that eliminated Alabama from the 1991 NCAA Atlantic Regional at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee, Fla. ... Jarrett's lead off walk in the seventh inning keyed FSU's 5-2 come-from-behind in the winner's bracket final ... ECU junior RHP Daniel Holder hails from Dothan, Ala., and attended Lurleen B. Wallace Community College ... Holder is 2-1 with 4.76 ERA in 15 games this season for the Pirates.
ALABAMA-EAST CAROLINA SERIES: Alabama and East Carolina will be meeting for the first time this weekend at the Conway Regional.
ALABAMA VS. CONFERENCE USA: Alabama owns a 193-81 (.705) all-time record against the current Conference USA field. The Crimson Tide will play its 275th all-time game against Conference USA against East Carolina in the first round of the Conway Regional. Alabama went 1-2 (.333) against Conference USA teams this season, splitting a two-game series with UAB and losing its only meeting with Southern Miss. Alabama beat UAB 6-4 on April 1 in Tuscaloosa and lost 8-5 the next day at Regions Park in Hoover. Alabama lost to Southern Miss on April 16 at Trustmark Park in Pearl. Alabama has played 233 of its 274 games against Southern Miss (93), Tulane (86) and UAB (53). Alabama head coach Jim Wells is 47-26 (.644) in his career against C-USA teams.

COLUMBIA SCOUTING REPORT: Columbia is hitting .288 (476 for 1,652) this season with 24 home runs and 243 RBI ... The Lions average 5.6 runs and 9.6 hits per game this season ... The Lions are led on offense by senior second baseman Henry Perkins, who is hitting .371 (69 for 186) in 50 games with three home runs and 34 RBI ... He leads the team with six triples and ranks second with 16 doubles ... Perkins is second with 20 stolen bases ... Freshman outfielder Nick Cox is second on the team with a .359 (69 for 192) average with one home run and 20 RBI ... He leads the Lions with 27 stolen bases and 46 runs scored ... As a team, Columbia has 94 stolen bases (118 attempts) this season ... Junior third baseman Mike Roberts leads the team with six home runs and 37 RBI ... On the mound, the Lions are 22-28 with nine saves and a 6.27 ERA ... Henry Perkins was the Ivy League Player of the Year, while Nick Cox was the Ivy League Rookie of the Year.
ALABAMA-COLUMBIA SERIES: Alabama and Columbia will be meeting for the first time this weekend at the Conway Regional.
ALABAMA VS. IVY LEAGUE: Alabama is 1-0 (1.000) against teams from the Ivy League, with its lone meeting coming against Princeton in the 1996 South I Regional in Tuscaloosa. In the first-ever post-season game at the Joe, Alabama blasted the Tigers, 19-2, on May 23, 1996. The Tide has never faced Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Harvard, Dartmouth, Penn or Yale. Coach Wells is 2-0 in his career against Ivy League schools. In addition to his 1996 NCAA Tournament win over Princeton, Wells led Northwestern State to a win over Dartmouth in 1991.
