Tide Student-Athletes Honored on Black Scholar's Day

TUSCALOOSA - Several University of Alabama student-athletes were recently honored on campus for their work in the classroom. Freshman men's basketball player Justin Knox, sophomore women's basketball player Tamara Williams and sophomore sprinter Brandon Spradley were honored by the University of Alabama Black Faculty and Staff Association at Black Scholar's Day.
All undergraduate African-American students were honored for having earned a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher and the Tide trio was among 650 students honored.
Knox is a Tuscaloosa native who played in 19 games this past season, averaging 2.3 points and 1.8 rebounds in Southeastern Conference play as a true freshman. His season bests included scoring six points and grabbing four rebounds off the bench at Kentucky. He had a season-best seven rebounds in a home game against Ole Miss. The 6-foot-9 forward is a business major at Alabama and he was a National Honor Society member and the salutatorian of his class at Tuscaloosa's Central High School.
Williams started in two games for the Crimson Tide this past season. Her best performance came on Jan. 10 against South Carolina when she shot 4-for-6, scoring 13 points to lead Alabama to its first conference win since 2006. She led the team twice in steals and twice in rebounds and averaged 2.3 points, 2.1 rebounds and 0.3 assists per game. Williams tallied 68 points and grabbed 64 rebounds and handed out 19 assists. The Alabaster, Ala., native averaged 2.1 points per game during SEC play. Williams was also named to the SEC Honor Roll.
Spradley started off his sophomore campaign by posting the top time for the Crimson Tide in the 60-meter dash indoors with a mark of 6.93. The Mobile, Ala., native was second on the squad in the indoor 200 meters with a time of 21.92, behind only All-American Michael Cooley. Thus far during the outdoor season, Spradley is second on the team in the 100 meters at 10.84 and is second in the 200 with a finish of 21.64. At the Alabama Relays, Spradley was a member of the 4x100-meter relay team that ran an NCAA Regional qualifying time of 40.21.
