AUBURN, Ala.- The University of Alabama women's tennis team takes on the sixth seed and No. 27 LSU Tigers tomorrow at 10 a.m. in the first round of the 2008 SEC Women's Tennis Championships.
"The SEC Championships begins a new season with new opportunities," said Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz. "The conference tournament is where you want to be playing your best tennis. This team has worked forward and gained momentum through the course of the season. We have been advancing and putting it together all season. Now, it's time to grab this chance."
Alabama heads into the tournament as the 11th overall seed and finished the conference season with a 2-9 record. The Tide is led by SEC All-Freshman Team honoree Tiffany Welcher at No. 1 singles. Welcher also plays doubles at No. 3 with fellow freshman Meritt Emery.
The Tide is 7-9 in the series with LSU that dates back to 1980. Earlier this season, Alabama dropped a 5-2 decision to the Tigers.
"I felt we had a battle with LSU in the regular season," said Mainz. "We had chances but could not convert them. They have picked up momentum and picked up some significant wins in late season play. I have said all season that we need to show up ready to play every point, bring our positive energy and continue doing the right things. If we handle these things proficiently then we put ourselves in a good position going in."
The Tigers are led by the 12th-ranked Megan Falcon in singles and the 22nd-ranked tandem of Falcon and Mykala Hedberg in doubles.
The 2008 SEC Women's Tennis Championships are hosted by Auburn University and matches will be held at Yarbrough Tennis Center. Further information can be found at www.rolltide.com.
