
Women's Track Battles Elements for Solid Weekend

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Alabama women's track and field team not only competed with some of the top teams in the nation but battled windy and wet elements as well at the Sea Ray Relays . Despite the inclement weather, personal bests and regional marks were once again eclipsed by the Tide.
"The team competed well this weekend despite the elements," head coach Sandy Fowler said. "As a whole we were able to find some things we need to work on."
Heather Matherson ran a personal best in the 100 meters with a wind-aided 11.44 to win the event. In the 400 meters, Trish Bartholomew placed third and was first among collegiate athletes with a time of 53.60.
In the 400 hurdles, Talaya Owens hit a regional mark with a time of 1:00.06, to place fourth overall. In the 800, Jordan Harper crossed the line in a time of 2:24.31. The steeplechase featured Ashley Ard and Kelsie Slater, the duo ran a 12:00.35 and a 12:39.43, respectively.
In the field events, Meghan Austin threw a big personal best and hit a regional mark in the javelin with a throw of 151-06 to place second overall. In the triple jump, Capri Knox put all three phases together for a leap of 38-07.00.
Shot putter Angelica Howard recorded a mark of 43-10.75 while Elizabeth Wilson heaved the hammer 147-11. The pole vaulting duo of Katherine Strickland and Lynda Cooper both cleared the height of 11-11.75.
Alabama will head to the Commodore Invitational next weekend for two days of competition. The meet will begin on Friday, April 18 in Nashville, Tenn.
