TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Day one came to a close at the Alabama Relays after five events were concluded in the decathlon and four in the heptathlon Thursday at the Sam Bailey Track and Field Complex on the University of Alabama campus. A total of 25 athletes got the meet started in the first half of their events.
"It is great to finally have the Alabama Relays here," Alabama head women's track coach Sandy Fowler said. "It brings a number of things to Tuscaloosa and the University of Alabama. With the incredible weather it looks like we will have far throws, fast times, and high heights, so I think the meet is set up pretty nice for the participating teams."
In the decathlon, Daryl Brady of Mississippi State leads the field with 3654 points after five events. Brady won the high jump with a leap of 6-08.75 to accumulate 850 points and then placed second in the long jump with a leap of 21-06.00 to amass 709 points.
In the heptathlon, Ashley Wilhelm, who entered the meet unattached leads the field after four events with 3327 points. A pair of Mississippi State Bulldogs follow to round out the top three with Laquinta Aaron second (3048 points) and Dorthy Youmans (3021 points) third.
On the men's side Alabama has two participants in the grueling event. Sophomore Kyle Dyar is currently in seventh with 3124 points. Unattached, Justin Brady sits in 10th with 2877 points.
For the Crimson Tide women, freshman Rachel Robbs is the lone competitor. The newcomer is currently in 12th place with 2223 points. Robbs set a personal best in the shot put en route to winning the event with a heave of 43-03.75.
The second day of the Alabama Relays will begin at 9:00 a.m. with the decathlon 110 hurdles. The women will kick off day two with the long jump at 10:00 a.m. The individual events will begin as well with the 10,000 meters at 5:00 p.m.
