Women?s Tennis Downs Houston 7-0

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.- The University of Alabama women's tennis team picked up its third consecutive victory today against the University of Houston at the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility on the University of Alabama campus.
"It was great getting a win today, especially on alumni weekend," said sophomore Paulina Bigos. "I think everyone did a great job by showing a lot of determination and outworking their opponents. I am really proud of the improvements we make each week and the level of tennis we are at right now."
Alabama, 6-7 overall and 2-2 in the SEC, earned the doubles point to start singles with a one point advantage. The Tide's top tandem of Bigos and Andrea Brenes defeated Lucy Forward and Izabella Glinzka 8-4 before Meritt Emery and Tiffany Welcher beat Houston's Vicky Simpson and Jordanna McCombs 8-6 from No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Welcher, Bigos and Emery earned three consecutive victories to give Alabama the win. Welcher was the first Tide player to finish. She defeated Forward 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. From the No. 2 slot, the Tide's Alice Tunaru beat Glinzka 6-3, 6-1 before Emery finished off Houston's Vicky Simpson 6-4, 6-0 for the win.
Bigos came from behind to defeat Leila Salek of Houston 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 from No. 2 singles to put the Tide up 5-0. Alabama's Shelley Godwin defeated her opponent in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 to put the Tide ahead 6-0 with one court remaining.
Brenes picked up the final Tide win of the day at No. 6 singles over Joanna Kacprzyk 6-0, 6-3 to end the match.
The Tide returns to conference action next weekend as it travels to Lexington, Ky. Friday to face Kentucky before heading home to host Vanderbilt on Sunday.
