AUBURN, Ala. ?? Alabama sophomore Aaron Fleshner finished fifth off the three-meter board at the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships being held here in the James E. Martin Aquatics Center on the Auburn campus.
“Aaron came back with a good second list in finals,” Alabama diving coach Pat Greenwell said. “He set himself up well to qualify on to nationals. He just has to keep it going tomorrow.”
Fleshner scored 718.70 on 12 dives, finishing less than a point out of fourth place. He has to finish among the top-10 men from this Zone to advance to the NCAA Championship. Last season he advanced and finished sixth off the three-meter board at the NCAA Championships, earning first-team All-American honors.
Freshmen Adam Booher and Chris Hearns were 30th and 37th respectively off the three-meter. Booher scored 265.05 points in prelims while Hearn tallied 235.60.
“Adam Booher did an ok job today,” Greenwell said. “We’ve got a very young group and we showed today that we still have things to learn.”
The women, who have 12 slots out of this zone, competed off the one-meter board where sophomore Elizabeth Hughes took 23rd in preliminaries after scoring 225.50 points. Freshman Baylee Ellson was 26th with 221.20 points and fellow rookie Olivia Covey was 36th with 204.60 points.
“Tomorrow is our day on the women’s side,” Greenwell said. “Between the three-meter tomorrow and the platform on Sunday, we have a chance to advance someone to nationals.”
Saturday sees the events flip-flip with the men competing off the one-meter board and the women climbing to three-meter. On Sunday both the men and women will competed off the platform.
