Divers Compete at NCAA Zone B Championships

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ?? The Alabama Swimming and Diving team will send its divers to the NCAA Zone B Championships in Auburn, Ala. this weekend where the Crimson Tide divers, along with those from the other 30+ schools at the championships will be vying for bids to the 2008 NCAA Championships.
There are five zone meets around the country, each with a specific number of bids to the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. From the Zone B Championships, 10 men and 12 women will advance. The women’s NCAA Championships will be held March 20-22 in Columbus, Ohio while the men’s championships will be held March 27-29 in Federal Way, Wash.
The Tide men will be led by All-American Aaron Fleshner who finished sixth off the three-meter board as a freshman at last year’s NCAA Championships and won the three-meter at the recent Southeastern Conference Championships. Fleshner was also second off the one-meter and fifth off platform at the 2008 SEC Championships.
Freshman Adam Booher scored off the one and three-meter boards as well as the platform at the SEC Championships. Freshmen Chris Hearn and sophomore Chris McCormick also scored at the SEC Championships.
Sophomore Elizabeth Hughes took third off the platform at the SEC Championships, leading the Tide women. She also scored off the three-meter board. Freshman Laura Dunn finaled off the one and three-meter boards and scored off the platform at the SEC Championships while fellow rookie Baylee Ellson scored in all three diving events at SECs. Freshman Olivia Covey finaled off the platform at the SEC Championships.
Competition at the Zone B Championships is expected to fierce with SEC schools Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, South Carolina and Tennessee being joined by such teams as Miami, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Clemson, North Carolina and Virginia. Competition starts Friday at noon with the women’s one-meter competition while the men will compete off the three-meter board. On Saturday, starting at noon, the men head to the three-meter while the women go off the one-meter and on Sunday, action starts at 10 a.m. with both the men and women climbing the platform.
