TUSCALOOSA, Ala.- Tiffany Welcher, a freshman on the University of Alabama women’s tennis team, earned her first honor as a part of the Crimson Tide this week after going undefeated in two conference matches last weekend.
“Tiffany had a stellar performance last weekend against both Mississippi State and Ole Miss,” said Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz. “She was clutch under pressure on Sunday being down 1-3 in the third set. I thought she demonstrated tremendous composure under pressure. This honor is well deserved.”
Welcher, a native of Clarksville, Ind., occupies the top singles slot for the Tide and is a regular in the doubles lineup at all three positions. From No. 1 singles, Welcher has compiled a 7-5 overall ranking and improved to 2-2 in conference play after last weekend.
Last weekend, Welcher defeated Martina Banikova of Mississippi State and Nika Koukhartchouk of Ole Miss to help lead her team to two 4-3 victories. In doubles, Welcher teamed up with fellow freshman Meritt Emery to go undefeated against the pair of Juskova and Makarycheva from Mississippi State and Subramanian and Podlipnik of Ole Miss.
“Tiffany certainly has the capabilities to be a frontrunner in the SEC as well as on the national level,” said Mainz. “She has incredible athleticism, has variety in her game and has great instincts coming forward to finish points. Tiffany has a favorable future ahead as her best tennis is in front of her.”
Welcher and the Tide are back in action this weekend against non-conference foe Houston Saturday, March 15 at the UA Varsity Courts. The match is slated to begin at 12:00 p.m.
