TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ?? It wasn’t the most efficient effort for the No. 4 University of Alabama softball team, but the Crimson Tide scored four runs with two outs in the fourth to take a lead that would never be threatened in a 6-2 win over Jacksonville State on Saturday at the UA Softball Facility.
Alabama, 3-0, gave up an early run to the Gamecocks, committed four errors and trailed heading into the bottom of the fourth. After an Ashley Holcombe groundout and a line out to center from Katie Johnson, the Tide offense began to click.
After a Brittany Rogers single and steal, Lauren Parker drove in a run, Dani Woods doubled and scored on a single by Charlotte Morgan and Kelley Montalvo drove in two with a single to left, giving UA a 4-0 lead.
That was easily enough for the pitching tandem of Morgan and Chrissy Owens, who recorded the first save of her season and moved into the all-time lead at Alabama with her 17th career save, moving her past Shelley Laird (1999-02) for sole possession of first place in career saves.
Owens pitched three innings, allowing one unearned run and a hit while striking out three. Morgan earned her first win of the season, pitching four innings, allowing two hits and striking out three.
Rogers and Woods continued to provide the offensive punch for Alabama. Rogers went 3-of-4 in the game, scored once and stole a base, her fifth of the season. Woods was 2-of-3 and scored a run, while Montalvo finished with a 2-for-3 performance with a team-high three RBI.
The Tide closes out the 2008 Hampton Inn Bama Bash with a rematch with Purdue. Alabama beat the Boilermakers, 8-0, on Friday night.
