TUSCALOOSA, Ala.- The University of Alabama volleyball team's spring season is almost underway, announced head coach Judy Green. Beginning the first week of March, the team will undergo 20 hours of practice a week in preparation for its spring competition schedule.
The Crimson Tide will host two events at the Capstone this spring, including playing four matches at the Student Recreation Center. New to the college volleyball scene and highlighting the spring schedule is the SEC Beach Doubles Tournament in Gainesville, Fl. To wrap up the spring campaign, the Tide will travel to New Orleans to participate in the Tulane Invitational.
"Our coaching staff and players know we have much work to do over the next eight weeks," said head coach Judy Green. "The spring season is a time to get players more playing experience and to experiment with different lineups."
The Tide kicks off its spring campaign as it hosts Georgia Tech at The Cave March 29. The two teams are scheduled to play at 10:00 a.m. and again at 1:30 p.m.
"For the most part our players need to play and our slated schedule will give us plenty of time to do just that," said Green.
The Tide returns to action the following week at the UA Student Recreation Center to host Samford and Jacksonville State in a round robin. Alabama kicks off the day's events with Samford at 9:00 a.m. The Tide plays Jacksonville State immediately following the match at 11:00 a.m.
On April 12 the SEC, along with Florida athletics, will host the inaugural Beach Doubles Championship in Gainesville, Fl. at Southwest Recreation Center. The tournament will feature three doubles teams from each of the conference's 11 teams and is the first-ever beach tournament held by a Division I conference.
"New on our schedule is the SEC Beach Doubles Championship," said Green. "The SEC is excited to be a front runner in promoting beach volleyball at the Division I level. This is going to be a first class event and our players are enjoying training in the sand. We feel by playing doubles our players will improve their overall game. Our philosophy is to make our athletes well rounded volleyball players."
The Crimson Tide rounds out its spring competition in New Orleans, La. at the Tulane Invitational Saturday, April 19.
