Tide Women?s Tennis Defeats Georgia State, 6-1

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ?? The University of Alabama women's tennis team improved to 3-4 on the 2008 season with a 6-1 victory over Georgia State (4-6 overall) Wednesday evening at the Varsity Courts on the UA campus.
"I'm happy with this victory because this was a match in which we could have let down but didn't," said Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz. "We need mid-week matches like this to work on everything, and I feel we accomplished some things today but I wasn't overly pleased with our intensity. We need to build on this and establish some confidence heading into the weekend."
Facing a GSU team that was shorthanded due to a player suspension and an injury, the Tide took the doubles point by winning the number three spot by forfeit while the Tide's number one duo of Andrea Brenes and Tiffany Welcher defeated GSU's Martina Nitkova and Katerina Gresova 8-5. GSU took the number two doubles match with an 8-6 victory by Dariana Kozmina and Kiara Powell over Paulina Bigos and Alice Tunaru.
Forfeits by GSU gave Alabama a 2-0 edge in singles before play had begun. At number three, Paulina Bigos gave the Tide a 6-2, 6-1 victory over GSU's Kiara Powell. GSU then notched its lone point of the day with a 6-4, 6-2 victory by Dariana Kozmina over UA's Alice Tunaru. The Tide wrapped up the victory with victories at No. 4 and No. 1. Meritt Emery downed GSU's Katerina Gresova at No. 4 by a count of 6-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8) while Tiffany Welcher closed out the match with a 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5) win over Martina Nitkova.
