Tide Golfers Still in 1st Going Into Final Round

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FLA. ?? Monday’s second round of the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational found the field waiting out an hour-and-fifty-minute morning rain delay, and when the teams finally finished play late Monday afternoon, the University of Alabama was still the tournament’s team leader.
Alabama is in position to successfully defend its 2007 John Hayt Collegiate championship as the Crimson Tide goes into Tuesday’s third and final round as the tournament’s leader. Alabama has a two-stroke lead against host North Florida to lead the field of 15. Alabama shot 290-293/583 and is 7-over par on the par 72 course at Sawgrass Country Club. North Florida is second at 585, followed by UCLA, 588, tied at fourth Charlotte and Tennessee, 591, tied at sixth Pepperdine and Georgia State, 592, at 8th South Carolina, 594, followed by UAB, 596, Florida, 601, Indiana, 603, tied at 12th Vanderbilt and Coastal Carolina, 604, at 14th Central Florida, 606, and Notre Dame, 607.
Georgia State’s Joe Sjohlm is the individual leader going into the final round. He’s at 5-under par after 36 holes, shooting 69-70/139 to have a three-shot leader against North Florida’s Michael O’Neal.
Alabama’s Mark Harrell and Michael Thompson are both four-shots out of the lead and among a five-way tied for third at 1-under. Harrell shot 72-71/143. Thompson shot 72-71/143. Also among the top 25 individuals is Alabama’s Joseph Sykora who slipped from fourth place in the opening round to T-22nd after two rounds. He shot 71-77/148 and is at 4-over par. Matt Hughes is T-35th at 6-over (75-75/150) and Matthew Swan is T-47th at 8-over par (76-76/152).
