
Avila, Matthes Named to Preseason All-SEC Team

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ?? University of Alabama junior catcher Alex Avila and junior outfielder Kent Matthes have been named to the 2008 SEBaseball.com preseason All-SEC team.
Avila, a first-team preseason All-SEC selection, was the Tide’s leading power source in 2007. He hit .296 (66-for-223) with 14 home runs and 61 RBI in 57 games. In 30 SEC games, he batted .294 (35-for-119) with 10 home runs and 38 RBI.
Matthes, a second-team preseason All-SEC pick, is the Crimson Tide’s leading returning hitter. He batted .307 (61-for-199) with eight home runs and 45 RBI in 51 games last year. In 24 SEC games, he hit .258 (25-for-97) with two home runs and 18 RBI.
The Crimson Tide opens the 2008 season this Friday, February 22, as they host the Cal Poly Mustangs at 6:30 p.m. at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
