TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ?? After struggling for five innings, a dangerous Georgia Tech offense turned it on at the right time, scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth that propelled the Yellow Jackets (3-3) to a 2-1 victory over Middle Tennessee (1-4) in the opener of the Hampton Inn Crimson Classic on Friday morning.
Tech, who had been held scoreless by No. 2 Alabama the previous night, had three hits in that sixth inning, including a clutch triple by right fielder Blair Shimandle that drove in teammate Kelly Eppinger for the tying run. Third baseman Amanda Crow singled to left immediately after, driving in Shimandle and giving the Yellow Jackets the lead.
Stephanie Morris went the distance on the mound for the Yellow Jackets, giving up seven hits and one unearned run. She tallied six strikeouts and walked two en route to the win.
Georgia Tech had 11 hits in the game, but had trouble with runners on-base. Aileen Morales, Christy Jones and Shimandle had two hits apiece.
Second baseman Ashley Cline of Middle Tennessee had two hits and Martha Davis scored the lone run of the game for the Blue Raiders in the top of the sixth. Kellie Head took the loss after surrendering two earned runs on 11 hits to go with five strikeouts.
