TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ?? New Mexico (3-1) managed to score only one run, and that came from the first hitter it sent to the plate in the game, but it was enough for the Lobo pitching staff who carried the team to a 1-0 shutout victory over Georgia Tech (3-4) in the second game of the Hampton Inn Crimson Classic on Friday.
Centerfielder Samantha Hughes single to center, stole second, advanced to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first, giving her New Mexico the only run it would need.
Lobo pitcher Kelly Ninemire threw six innings of scoreless ball, giving up six hits and walking three but getting out of several jams in the game. Kyla Nelson pitched the final inning, earning the save with a perfect 1-2-3 inning in the top of the seventh.
Yellow Jacket pitcher Whitney Humphreys gave up only four hits and walked two but got the loss to move to 1-2 on the season. Christy Jones had two hits for Tech.
The game lasted just 1 hour and 48 minutes, with Humphreys retiring nine consecutive batters on fly-outs at one point in the game.
