BATON ROUGE, Ala. - Brooks Webster had a match-high 17 kills in Alabama's 3-1 loss to LSU in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center Friday night. The Tigers won set one 25-12, but the Crimson Tide came back to claim the second set 25-16. LSU won both the third and fourth frames by a score of 25-14. With the loss, Alabama dips to 12-11 on the season and 5-9 in Southeastern Conference play, while the Tigers improve to 13-9 overall and 8-7 in league matches.
"I thought LSU served the ball extremely well tonight," said Head Coach Judy Green. "They made us look very one dimensional at times. I am proud of our team's ability to adapt as we went through the match. We were creative in our defensive schemes and saw some very positive things come out of tonight."
Webster was the lone Tide player that had double-digit kills for the match. Behind her were Ashley Frazier and Alyssa Meuth, who each added six kills. Stephanie Riley handled the bulk of the assists racking up 33, while Amy Pauly collected a team-high 13 digs.
The Tigers struck first in the opening set with a kill from Brittnee Cooper. On the next play, LSU committed a serving error awarding Alabama its first point. The Tigers collected the next four points bringing the score to 5-2. LSU continued to distance itself from the Tide as the match progressed. Its largest lead came at sets end when the Tigers closed out the first 25-12 off another Cooper kill.
Alabama jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the second behind a Calli Johnson kill and a Frazier service ace. LSU kept close tying the set on three occasions, but the Tide pulled ahead behind the efforts of an 8-2 run bringing the score to 12-6. Alabama continued to control the set going up by as many as 10 at 23-13. The Tigers scored the next three points, but the Tide got back-to-back kills from Johnson and Frazier to end the second 25-16.
LSU put up the first point of the third off a kill. Alyssa Meuth countered with a kill for Alabama tying the score at 1-1. The score remained close early on in the set, but the Tigers finished strong with a 9-2 run to take the third 25-14.
Johnson and Frazier teamed together for a big block to open the fourth, but LSU responded with a trio of points to gain the 3-1 edge. The Tigers lead continued to build throughout the set before the Tide rattled off four straight points. LSU held on, thought, finishing the set 25-14.
Next up, Alabama travels to take on Georgia Sunday at 12:30 p.m. (CST). The Tide returns home next weekend for a pair of SEC contests against Ole Miss and Arkansas.
