TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Volleyball Head Coach Judy Green announced the signing of Kayla Fitterer Thursday. Fitterer, who hails from Edwardsville, Ill., is ranked No. 81 on Prepvolleyball.com's 2009 Senior Aces list.
"We are very excited about Kayla joining our program here at Alabama," said Green. "She's a very physical type of outside hitter who possesses very good athleticism. Kayla has a great, powerful arm swing. However, what really attracted us to her was that she is a complete person. She excels both on the court and in the classroom and is a big part of her community back in Edwardsville."
Fitterer is the most highly recruited player in Edwardsville history. She led her team to back-to-back conference and regional championships and advanced to the sectional championships this season. During her sophomore season at nearby Althoff High School, Fitterer guided her team to conference, regional, sectional and super-sectional championships after advancing to the regional championships her freshman campaign.
In 2007, she was among the nation's top recruits being named to Prepvolleyball.com's Top 50 Recruits in the 2009 Class. In addition, she was named the Alton Telegraph Large School Volleyball Player of the Year, Illinois All-State First Team, News-Democrat AA All-Area Second Team and Southwestern Conference First Team. At the conclusion of her sophomore season, Fitterer garnered Illinois All-State Second Team honors, News-Democrat Class AA All-Area First Team accolades and South Seven Conference First Team distinction. She was also named St. Louis Post Dispatch Athlete of the Week. Fitterer's freshman season produced several awards as well being named to the Illinois All-State Honorable Mention team, News-Democrat AA All-Area Second Team and South Seven Conference First Team. She was a four-year varsity starter throughout high school and currently holds her school's career kills record with 1,259.
Fitterer is also active in volleyball outside of her high school having trained at the U.S. Olympic Training Center as part of the High Performance program. Known as the pipeline for young volleyball athletes to reach the elite levels of the sport, the High Performance program helps to train and provide top-level competition to those in attendance. In 2006, Fitterer was a member of the USA Volleyball Youth National A2 Team.
Kayla is the daughter of Scott and Kara Fitterer. She has one sister, Sarah (18), and one brother, Eric (15).
"We are delighted to have a player of Kayla's character and athletic ability joining our program," added Green. "We look forward to her arrival."
