
Volleyball Sweeps Mississippi State

STARKVILLE, Miss. - The volleyball team picked up a 3-0 win Wednesday night against Mississippi State at the Newell-Grissom Building by scores of 25-17, 25-23, 25-21. With the win the Crimson Tide improves to 11-10 on the season and 4-8 in Southeastern Conference play, while the Bulldogs drop to 6-17 overall and 1-11 in league matches.
"I was very pleased with our blocking effort tonight," said head coach Judy Green. "We want to take this win and build on our success."
Leading the Alabama offense was Brooks Webster who tallied nine kills. Right behind Webster was Alyssa Meuth with seven, followed by Lindsey Buteyn and Calli Johnson each with six kills. Lauren Martin led the setting duo with 14 assists, while Stephanie Riley added 13 of her own. Amy Pauly topped all defenders with 13 digs. The Tide as a team recorded nine blocks.
Alabama opened the first set with a well-balanced offensive team effort. A total of eight Tide players registered points in the opening frame. The first couple of minutes were close, but Alabama quickly surged ahead on a 10-4 run. Mississippi State attempted a comeback, but could not come any closer than four. The Tide would close out the set on a Webster kill cementing the score at 25-17.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the second. Alabama tied it up on three occasions early before going ahead 5-4 off a Buteyn kill. The Tide continued to build on its lead pulling in front by as many as seven at 17-10. Mississippi State rallied to get back in the set going on a 12-6 run bringing the score to 23-22. Alyssa Meuth nailed down a kill on the next play to give the Tide the 24-22 advantage, but the Bulldogs answered with a kill of their own. Johnson sealed the set win for Alabama with a kill on the ensuing drive.
Mississippi State came out of the break with a quick 4-1 run to begin the third set. Alabama battled back to tie the score five times before taking the lead late at 22-21 off an Ashley Frazier block. The Tied knocked down the final three points of the set to win the third 25-21.
Alabama held the Bulldogs to just .031 percent hitting on the match including -.026 in the second frame.
The Tide travels to Auburn for its second of four consecutive road contests Sunday, Nov. 2. Opening serve is slated for 1:30 p.m. (CST).
