ATHENS, Ga. - Shelley Godwin captured the B Draw singles final crown with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Mississippi State's Natalie Mayuk Monday at the ITA Southern Regional Championships. Godwin went a perfect 5-0 in singles play at the tournament and improves to 9-2 overall on the fall season.
"Shelley played a good match and did a tremendous job of handling the conditions," said head coach Jenny Mainz. "It was very cold and windy out there today. She came out ready to compete from the very first ball. I think she gained a lot of confidence throughout this tournament which is really something she was hoping to do."
In the round of 32, Godwin picked up a win over Florida State's Bonny Davidson 7-5, 6-4. The Tide senior then went on to post a 6-0, 6-0 sweep over Kennesaw State's Lindsay Dillon in the round of 16. On Sunday, she picked up another pair of wins in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds to advance to Monday's finals. Godwin met up with South Florida's Lauren Shumate in the quarterfinals where the Alabama netter earned the 6-3, 7-6(2) decision. In the semifinals, Godwin dropped the first set 1-6 to the Bulldogs' Valeriya Makarycheva before winning the second 6-4 and pulling out the tiebreak 1-0(10).
"Shelley did an excellent job of representing the University of Alabama and this program and pulled out a great win on the last day," added Mainz.
Godwin, and the rest of the Tide women's tennis team, will take the courts for the final time this fall when it hosts the SEC Fall Coaches Classic Nov. 6-9 at the University of Alabama Tennis Stadium.
