TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - If there is one key to rowing at Alabama, one concept that coach Larry Davis wants to get across to his athletes, it's consistency.
Consistency in effort, consistency in technique and consistency in attitude. All those things, along with an unwavering work ethic, are the foundation on which the Tide is building its program, now in its third season as a varsity team.
Consistency in terms of effort, determination and drive have been the watchwords through the fall training camp. With half the varsity having just two semesters of rowing experience under its belt, Davis has spent as much of the fall teaching his young team what it takes to compete at the NCAA Division I level as he has the techniques of moving a boat over the water.
"We've had some stretches where I've seen the type of speed that tells me this team can make a big step forward this year," Davis said. "But at the same time, we're still working on getting that speed, that kind of effort every day, in every practice in every piece."
Davis was pleased with consistency he saw Saturday at the season opening Chattanooga Head Race on the Tennessee River. His squad came away with seven top-10 finishes, with one boat, the Tide's fourth 4+ boat, taking 11th.
"We rowed well and we were consistent on Saturday," Davis said. "I was pleased with how we did. Now we just have to come back and train that much harder and row to our ability every practice, every workout."
