
Women?s Basketball Falls to Mississippi State, 72-59

TUSCALOOSA- In the first of two consecutive road games in the state of Mississippi, the University of Alabama women’s basketball team came up short against Mississippi State, falling 72-59.
The Tide hung close with the Bulldogs in the second half but was unable to overcome a 12 point halftime deficit. Alabama cut the MSU lead to three points (47-44) on a Tierney Jenkins lay-up with 11:25 left in the game but could not draw any closer.
Jenkins led the way for the Tide on the offensive end, scoring 16 points on 8-14 shooting from the floor. She also made solid contributions on the defensive end with two steals and six rebounds to tie for team lead in both categories.
Camilla Blands and Talisha Chandler both broke into double figures in the scoring column with 10 points a piece. Courtney Strauthers gave the Tide a lift off the bench with eight points and six rebounds in 20 minutes of action.
For the game, Alabama shot 41 percent (25-61) from the field and 35 percent (6-17) from beyond the arc. The Tide held the Bulldogs to 40 percent (21-53) overall and 35 percent (6-17) from the three-point line.
The big discrepancy came at the foul line where MSU shot 24-28 compared to 3-6 for Alabama. By the end of the game, four Tide players had four fouls.
Alabama went into the half trailing 33-21. Katie Hancock paced the Tide in the frame, scoring all seven of her points in the first stanza, on 3-for-5 shooting, including a three.
Alabama trailed by only three points (15-12) with 10:53 to go in the half, but the Lady Bulldogs put together an 11-2 run over the next three minutes to take a 26-14 lead. Mary Kathryn Govero led all scorers in the frame with nine points.
Alexis Rack led the Bulldog offense with 19 points. All five of her field goals came from three-point range (5-8). Robin Porter added 14, and Marneshia Richard pitched in 10. Tysheka Grimes grabbed 15 boards to lead everyone in that category.
With the loss, Alabama moves to 1-5 in SEC play and 8-13 overall. MSU improves to 2-4 in the conference and 14-7 overall.
The Tide will close out the mini-road trip in Oxford, Miss., where they will do battle with the Ole Miss Rebels. The game will be played on Sunday, February 3 at 2:00 p.m. CST.
