TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ?? The University of Alabama women’s tennis team is known for its discipline on and off the court, and that discipline comes from the top down. As a former GTE Academic All-American, head coach Jenny Mainz knows what it takes to succeed in the classroom and instills the same values in her team.
For the fall semester, the women’s team posted a 3.486 overall GPA, which is the second highest GPA since 2003-04.
“I was very pleased with the commitment displayed in the classroom this fall,” said Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz. “It’s evident that this team is dedicated to academic excellence and takes tremendous pride in their studies.”
Even with eight underclassmen on the roster, the Crimson Tide managed to adjust to the demands of collegiate athletics.
“This young group did a nice job of adjusting well to the demands of college life and established themselves in the academic arena," said Mainz. "I’m proud of their achievements.”
Academic excellence is not a new concept for Coach Mainz and Alabama women’s tennis. In her tenure at the Capstone, Mainz’s teams have earned the highest team GPA award five times, with the 2002 squad producing a GPA of 3.65. In the past five years, Tide women’s tennis has earned above a 3.4 each year.
Individually, at least four members of the Crimson Tide have been recognized on the All-SEC Academic Honor Roll in each year of Mainz’s tenure.
The Tide travels to Greenville, S.C. this weekend to face UNC-Charlotte Saturday, Feb. 9 at 1:00 p.m. before squaring off aginst Furman Saturday, Feb. 10 at noon.
