FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. ?? The Alabama men's track and field team completed day one at the Razorback Invitational Friday night in the Randal Tyson Track Center on the University of Arkansas campus. The Tide had athletes compete in five events, including day one of the heptathlon.
"From a competitive standpoint I thought we had a good day," head coach Harvey Glance said. "All in all, it went well and we will see how it goes tomorrow."
Alabama put together a good showing on day one by placing athletes in the top 10 in every event. Senior Michael Cooley knocked off over a tenth of second over the course of a week by crossing the line in the 200 meters in 21.56 to finish 10th overall.
In the pole vault Brandon Schneider placed seventh overall, clearing a height of 16-02.75. In the long jump the duo of Tim Grier and Michael Nichols made an impressive showing.
Grier placed fifth overall with a NCAA provisional leap of 24-11. The jump was a personal best for Grier as the sophomore bettered his PR on both legal attempts. The Powder Springs, Ga. native jumped a foot farther than last week at Notre Dame to place him eighth all-time in the Alabama record books.
Michael Nichols closely followed Grier with a seventh place finish. Nichols jumped 24-5, hitting the mark on his third attempt.
In the distance medley, Alabama finished fourth overall with a time of 9:53.04. David Clyburn began his two-day meet by completing the first four events in the heptathlon. Clyburn took top honors in the high jump portion by clearing 6-5 for a total of 767 points.
Alabama will conclude its stay at the Razorback Invitational tomorrow. First events will begin at 10:00 a.m. in the Randal Tyson Track Center.
