
Women?s Track Concludes Kentucky Invitational With Personal Bests

Lexington, KY ??The Alabama women’s track and field team completed competition Saturday at the 2008 Kentucky Invitational from the Nutt Fieldhouse. The Tide concluded the opening meet with some personal best as Alabama had athletes in seven different events.
“I think the meet went pretty well for us,” head coach Sandy Fowler said. “We had a few personal bests. That is a good indication that things are moving forward.”
In the mile, senior Julia Hicks led the Tide with a 14th place finish. Hicks crossed the line at 5:01.60. Ashley Ard followed with a personal best 5:10.78 to finish 28th overall. Kelsie Slater and Megan Williams rounded out the Tide milers with times of 5:17.67 and 5:54.64, respectively.
In the shot put, four freshmen made their collegiate debuts for the Tide. Angelica Howard uncorked the shot 45-07.25 to place ninth overall. Christina Octavien finished 13th with a personal-best toss of 42-06.25. Rachel Robbs closely followed with a personal best 41-01.75 to place 15th. Jessica Hand rounded out the Tide throwers with a mark of 29-06.75.
In the long jump, freshman Capri Knox was the lone participant for the Tide. Knox jumped 16-06.50 to finish 26th overall. Robbs made her first career appearance in the 60m hurdles, finishing with a time of 9.45. Newcomer Devon Romero was also the lone UA member in the 60m dash, recording a time of 8.11.
In the 800, two Tide runners finished together with Jordan Harper crossing the line at 2:22.24 and Kelsie Slater finishing at 2:24.56. Sophomore Rue Chitwood completed the 800m in 2:36.11.
Hicks competed her first weekend of events with an 8th place finish in the 3000m. The senior crossed the line at 9:56.74. Junior Farrah Stewart crossed the line 10:42.47 while Ard completed her day with a time of 10:51.05.
Alabama will continue its 2008 indoor schedule at the Clemson Invitational. The meet is scheduled for Friday, Jan 18 in Clemson, S.C.
