Milwaukee, Wisc.- The University of Alabama women's tennis team wrapped-up play today at the 32nd Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic at the Western Racquet Club in Elm Grove, Wisc.
"We came to the tournament with clear objectives, to get invaluable match experience and find rhythm and combinations in doubles," said Alabama head tennis coach Jenny Mainz. "I think we achieved those goals and we got to try a lot of different doubles combinations."
Senior Andrea Brenes was awarded the Mulcahy Award for her positive sportsmanship during the tournament. Brenes shared the award with Jose Moncada of DePaul, who received the award on the men's side of competition.
Sophomore Bianca Svensson led the team in singles victories this weekend as she defeated all three of her opponents. Today, Svensson defeated Tiffany Clifford, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7), of Texas A&M. The Aggies finished No. 29 in the final 2007 ranking.
"Bianca led the team in singles this weekend," said Mainz. "She not only led on the court, but she led with her enthusiasm and that was good to see. We need someone to do that for us and she did that this weekend."
Brenes played a close match against Texas A&M's Sammons, falling, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8). Freshman Tiffany Welcher faced off against her first ranked opponent in her collegiate tennis career in No. 85 Else Potgieter of Texas A&M. Welcher fell in straight sets.
"Our learning curve is steep and we have a lot of maturing to do," said Mainz. "With a young team, more will be expected and demanded of the young players and they have to learn to use better shot selection and be better decision makers under pressure. However, we had some bright spots and it is important that we get to work immediately on what we learned from the weekend."
The Crimson Tide returns to the Capstone next weekend as it hosts the Roberta Alison Fall Classic. The tournament begins Friday, September 28 with matches starting at 9:00 a.m. All matches will be played at the UA Varsity Courts and the Student Recreation courts.
