TUSCALOOSA, Ala.- The University of Alabama volleyball team held its annual Crimson/White scrimmage today in the CAVE in front of a lively crowd. The Tide competed for over an hour, with the team split into two squads.
"It felt good to be in a competitive type situation with live officials to get that feel of being in a live match," said Alabama head coach Judy Green. "I thought we did a lot of really good things tonight and our level of play on both sides of the net was high."
After losing the first game 23-30 the Crimson squad, led by senior Crystal Hudson, rallied back and took the next two games, 15-13, 15-9, to win the match. Hudson led the team with 11 kills in 15 attacks, resulting in a .733 hitting percentage. Freshman Lauren Martin dished out 24 assists to lead the team in that category and sophomore defensive specialist Jennifer Weber tallied a team high seven digs.
"We are going to spend a little more time on our offense but I like where we are right now," said Green. "That was certainly the most competitive Crimson/White scrimmage we've ever had and I thought the crowd was great tonight. It was really fun to see a lot of people out here to watch the Tide."
Next weekend the Crimson Tide travels to Norman, Okla. to open the 2007 season. The Tide is one of four teams competing in the OU Sooner Legends/Nike Invitational August 24-25. Alabama faces Seton Hall Friday, August 24 at 5:00 p.m. in its first match of the season.
The Tide opens its home schedule the following weekend with the Academy Sports Bama Bash in Tuscaloosa. The Tide squares off against UAB Friday, August 31 at 12:30 p.m. in the CAVE. Admission to the event is $3 per match for adults 18 and up and all UA students are free.
