
Augustus Maiyo Wins the NCAA Mideast Regional Steeplechase Championship

Maiyo, who finished second at the SEC Championships to Ole Miss runner Barnabus Kiriu, was in the front pack for the entire race and second place coming into the final turn behind Kiriu. Down the final stretch Maiyo out sprinted Kiriu and caught him at the finish line to win the regional championship by three-tenths of a second.
"I am real proud or Maiyo he has worked so hard for this success," Glance added. "To be an NCAA Regional champ in this region is pretty impressive."
Maiyo's time of 8:35.12 is the third fastest time in the country this season and nearly six seconds faster than his previous best. With today's victory he automatically qualifies for the NCAA national championship race in two weeks.
"I am very excited right now. I knew I wanted to win this race, and I could sprint at the end and catch (Ole miss runner) Kiriu. I just wanted to run my race and keep him close," Maiyo said.
Freshman Tyler Boswell competed in his first NCAA regional in the high jump. He jumped a height of 6-09 which was good enough for an 11th place finish.
With his height of 7-01.75 from the SEC Championships he will still receive an at large bid to the NCAA national championships. He had the 16th best height in the country coming into this weekend.
